A Bay-Arenac ISD Program Serving Middle School age Children with Mild and Moderate Disabilities

Special Education programs are designed to enhance the academic and social skills as well as the independence of students who are 12 through 15 years of age with mild and moderate cognitive disabilities.

Areas of instruction include Language Arts, Math, Pre-vocation, Physical Education, and Independent Living. The curriculum is designed to address each student's developmental level. All students work toward individualized goals as defined in their Individual Education Plan (IEP). Parents and guardians are considered essential participants in their child's education plan.

Enrichment activities include field trips that support and reinforce academic, social, and communication instruction. Behavioral expectations will reflect the student's age and mental ability as they relate to handy Middle School's Code of Conduct.

Handy Developmental Center classrooms are housed within a general education middle school. This program setting provides our students with a safe, nurturing, age-appropriate environment that allows students the opportunity to engage in activities with their general education peers.
